Cumulative Track-Initiation Probability as a Basis for Assessing Sonar-System Performance in Anti-Submarine Warfare

چکیده

Calculations of sonar-system performance for anti-submarine warfare yield detection probability as a function of range to the target; whereas sonar operators typically think in terms of a ‘detection range’. This Note considers how to connect these two concepts for active sonar. Four types of probability are explored and their relative advantages teased out in the light of realworld examples. It is concluded that cumulative probability of track initiation provides the most practical route to a definition of detection range, for two reasons. First, unlike detection probability as usually computed, it produces values that operators are likely to regard as believable. Secondly, it reflects more closely than the standard detection probability the steps that operators typically go through in deciding to declare a detection.

Synthetic Aperture Imaging and Autofocus with Coherent Mimo Sonar Systems

MIMO stands for Multiple Inputs Multiple Outputs. Such systems have received a lot of interests in the radar community during the last decade1 . One of the main reason behind this is the greater variety in terms of target view angles compared with traditional monostatic systems. With several independent views one can hope to reduce the speckle effect typical of coherent sensor systems such as R...

An ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) Simulator on Smart Phones

As modern weapon systems become complex and expensive, there is an increasing need to predict the effectiveness of a new weapon system before the actual development. In this paper, we present an ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) simulator to measure the effectiveness of a TAS (Towed Array Sonar) on smart phones. Our simulator is composed of Red and Blue submarine model, Environment model (i.e. sea) ...

Contact Fusion and Multi-Hypotheses Tracking for Low Frequency Active Sonar Data

Towed low frequency active sonar systems (LFAS) are used in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) to detect submarines. LFAS systems are hampered by reverberation in shallow water environments because the interaction of sound with the sea bottom can lead to a large number of point-like sonar contacts resulting in a high false alarm rate. Reducing the false alarm rate under a non-decreasing probability o...

A Simulation Model of Networked Tracking for Anti-submarine Warfare

This report describes a simulation model of sonar tracking, developed to explore the effect of networking sonars on tracking performance. The tracker is an extended Kalman filter with data association by nearest-neighbour in Mahalanobis distance. Data fusion algorithms also use Mahalanobis distance. Simulation outputs have been verified against analytical results where possible.

Dynamically coupled 3D visualization and real-time simulation as an aid to developing mental models of sonar

Training sonar operators for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) in complex environments is challenging. Performance deficiencies are the product of errors in both analysis and employment. Experts use mental models to interpret displays and reason about the underlying scenario in order to perform analysis under uncertain conditions and achieve more optimal tactical-system employment. To accelerate the...
